All Participants to bring:
Loom: The loom should have a weaving width of at least 15″. The wider the loom the more space you
have to turn the tablets.
Tablets : 34
Reed : 8 dent reed
Shuttles: 1 boat shuttle and 1 netting needle (8 inches)
4 large (2 liter) plastic bottles with caps (ginger ale or coke bottles): The bottles will be filled with
water and used as weights for the tablet warp.
2 big C-clamps: these clamps will be used to clamp your table loom to the table. If you are using a floor
loom, you do not need the clamps.
2 medium size C-clamps (2 inches) : these clamps will be used to make the tablet warp around.
Strong string: (small amount) it will be used to tie the bottles to the warp.
Yarn: 10/2 mercerized cotton in two contrasting colors. One color for the fabric warp and weft and
another color for the tablet warp. You will need approx. ½ lb. for the fabric warp and weft, and 1/4 lb. for the tablet warp. Wind the yarn for the tablet warp into four balls using a ball winder.
Other yarns: You will also need small amounts of other yarns such as fine silk, knitting yarn, embroidery floss, metallic and any other yarns you can think of. These yarns will be used for the various embellishments that we will be adding to the tablet border.
Other materials needed:
beads, bead needle, beading thread, metallic sewing thread
knitting needle, any size.
books with ideas for beading patterns and brocading patterns. Books with cross stitch patterns or
knitting patterns are great sources for ideas
graph paper (8 – 10 squares per inch)
paper, pencil and eraser
large rubber bands
small plastic bucket (mop bucket)
one extra reed (any dent size and it should be able to fit over the plastic bucket and when laid across it not to fall into it).
Instructions on how to set up the loom:
For this workshop there will be two warps in the loom. One of the warps will be the fabric warp and the other will be the tablet warp. The fabric warp will be 6 inches wide and the tablet warp will be 1 1/4 inches wide.
Participants should come to class with the fabric warp already wound on the loom, threaded and sleyed. The tablet warp will be made in class and put on the loom in class.
How to make the fabric warp and put it on the loom:
Length of warp : 2 yards
Sett : 24 ends per inch
Reed size : 8 (it is important that you use an 8 dent reed because it has to accommodate the tablet warp as well).
Sley : 3 ends per dent
Total ends : 144
Place the fabric warp in the loom as far to the left side as possible if you are working on a 15″ table loom. This will give you enough space for the tablet warp and to be able to turn the tablets comfortably during weaving. If you are working on a wider loom the warp should be placed in the loom slightly to the left so there is enough space for the tablet warp and to turn the tablets. Thread the loom in a straight draw (1,2,3,4, repeat) and sley the warp three ends per dent in a 8 dent reed.
Do not tie it to the front apron.
