Margarita Korioth

The Artist:

Margarita Korioth is a fiber artist and quilting instructor who resides in Tennessee. She likes to work with a combination of paper and fabric or fabric alone. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States. In 2019, she received the Surface Design Award at Quilt National.

Her passion is one of experimentation and discovery of new ways to convert cloth into art. Her recent work emphasizes surface design such as dyeing, stamping, silk screening and stitching with a focus of lettering on fabric. Margarita has published more than 35 articles in national and international quilting magazines. She has also appeared on several “Quilting Arts TV” shows.

Guild Meeting/Program:  The Odd Couple, Paper & Fabric in Quilts

Paper with fabric? This peculiar blend can generate interesting works of art. In this informative lecture, Margarita will share her journey of combining paper and quilting. She will also give tips on how to incorporate mixed media into your art.

Mini Workshop: Putting It All Together: Mixed Media and Collaborations

You will have fun and play with unconventional mediums such as colorful paper napkins and cloth. Learn two ways to work with paper napkins. First, laminate them and applique on cloth to make a one-of-a-kind butterfly. You will then apply simple stitching for the antennas. Afterwards, Margarita will demonstrate how to use them with cheesecloth. You will have your creation ready to be finished at home with hand or machine stitching.

4 to 5 colorful paper-napkins (the idea is to exchange them with our classmates to end up with a variety to use in our art)
Paper scissors

Air erasable marker

Sewing supplies: Materials you like to use for hand sewing: thimble, scissors, needle threader; old sewing machine needle size 90 or 100; needles: I prefer Sashiko (Big eye straight thin by Tulip) or embroidery needles sizes 3-9

Extended Workshop: Washable Paper Cloth

Let’s recycle paper and create art. This is an environmentally friendly class. First, you will learn how to make *washable* paper-cloth with recycled newspapers. This is Margarita’s original technique to obtain a seamless integration of paper on cloth that you can iron, paint, and sew by hand or by machine. Then you will learn how to prepare magazine clippings to easily applique by hand on to cloth. This workshop is best for students with some surface design experience.

Kit includes one yard of prepared cotton fabric; set of two silkscreens; instructions and pattern; squeegee; plastic knife; materials to laminate the magazine clippings; mediums and auxiliaries; a variety of Margarita’s own silkscreens to use in class; wax papers; pen for fabric; air erasable pen; blue painter’s tape

15” by 15” piece of felt (any color)
One newspaper: New York Times or Wall Street Journal no more than one week old
Any other newspaper you want to try from your local store (even if it’s older than a week)
8 to 10 magazine pages with light background (thin paper works best: AARP, cooking, People magazine, etc.)
Plastic ruler — 6” by 12” or similar size
One small plastic container (4 oz. ) with a lid
One plastic shoebox
One big beach towel
One small hand towel
Paper and Fabric scissors
Kitchen timer (with new batteries). You can also use your phone (bring a charger)
Disposable gloves (optional) — this is a wet technique
Black or Blue Frixion heat erasable pen
Pencil
Notebook and pen
Apron, painting clothes and comfortable shoes
